Notes
When Tom arrived to the village of kishaike, he was welcomed and accompanied by three committee members who took him around the village checking on what fellow residents were doing to improve on their sanitation and hygiene. Tom was concerned about hand washing but also what those homes that lost their Latrines to a heavy storm were doing to replace those collapsed latrines. As they moved, they made sure that they visited the homes that lost their latrines and encourage the residents to replace them as soon as possible. In the first homes they visited on the lower section about 8 homes, only three had lost their latrines and all had started to reconstruct and replace the collapsed latrines. Tom thanked them for being pro active but also cautioned them not to leave their newly constructed latrines with out roofs as they too will collapse. Tom also encouraged the residents on hand washing stands. For those that did not put cement on their hand washing stands, the stands had crumbled too. Tom encouraged the residents to get some cement and put on the hand washing stands to give them some durability. In other four homes with the collapsed latrines, they also found when they had started on the reconstruction by digging new pits. Tom urged them to roof their latrines and well as encouraged them to use better logs as some had weak logs and weak walls with no roofs. For the homes that can’t construct with bricks, Tom encouraged them to use mud but to roof the latrine as well as smearing them to give them durability. In one home they found when the resident was retrieving bricks that had fallen in the old pit so that he can use them to reconstruct the latrine. Tom thanked the resident and encouraged him to use better logs as well as working hard to roof the new latrine.
