- Irene went to maliga to teach about how malaria is caused, spread and prevention. Irene started with a review of the previous lessons then again asked the members how malaria was spread and how it’s caused. Naikoba said it’s spread after eating plenty of fruits especially mangoes during the mango season, wanyana said drinking un boiled water from the wells, kyosiga said staying outside in too much cold and mosquitoes bite you.
Irene added on the members views and said malaria is a life threatening disease transmitted through a bite of a female anopheles mosquito, parasites mature from the liver and she also explained the whole process to when one gets infected with malaria.
Irene also discussed some of the ways through which malaria is spread and how mosquitoes are multiplied and the members gave several views among which included mother to child, infected mosquito bite, she also added that it’s only an infected mosquito that can spread malaria, transfusion of infected blood among others.
Irene also asked the members to ask questions and waiswa asked,” can mosquitoes also spread HIV/AIDS? Irene replied and said Mosquitoes can’t get infected with HIV instead the virus gets broken down and is digested in the mosquitoes stomach adding more explanation to make the members understand the point.
Irene ended the lesson by asking the members how to prevent the spread of malaria and how to control mosquitoes and the members mentioned sleeping under mosquito nets, Irene added that the nets should be treated, taking prophylaxis medicines, spreading insecticide among others. Irene then promised the members that next time they meet they will talk about skin infections at the same time and same place.
