Notes
Alex, Chris Bulolo and David were in Kirwanire village to conduct triggering in open defecation and sensitize the village to realize the dangers of open defecation. From the baseline survey that was conducted recently, many of the households didn’t have pit latrines and there were many cases of open defecation in the village. They were joined by the health assistant from Ivukula sub county, the district police officer and the parish chief. Together we joined voices to sensitize the village about the dangers of practicing open defecation. Since many of the people lack pit latrines in this village, the feaces was got just a few steps walking from the venue where triggering was held. All the people that were present at the triggering meeting agreed that they drink and eat human feaces and also accepted that no one in their village is safe. During the discussions, the Health assistant Mr. Busense Patrick from the sub county told the village people to work very hard and redeem themselves from this bad state they are living now. The police officer told them that it’s illegal to practice open defecation and educated them about the values of proper sanitation and hygiene saying that this village can develop economically if the village changes its ways and end open defecation. The kibo staff Alex, David and Chris demostrated food and feacal matter cycle. The village was very amazed to see the connection and how feaces move from one place to another by houseflies, wind, animal ropes, birds and many other ways. At the end of it all, the village was very much touched and thanked kibo group for organizing this wonderful lesson to their village. Five people volunteered to spearhead the program and vowed to do whatever it takes to redeem their village sanitation and hygiene status. The chairman was very grateful for the pick axes and shovels given to the village by Kibo Group and the village gave themselves a period of up to 2 months ( 26/04/2020) for everyone to have all these necessary sanitation facilities. The village was guided to make sure their facilities meet the standards and this is when the village will be considered open defecation free and be on another level. The sanitation committee shall begin their job immediately after a training with WASH about how they will be working to guide the village on proper sanitation and hygiene standards.
