Notes
Introduction Lorna went to Nawampiti to meet with the leaders after 2 months since the covid outbreak. She met with the committee members on a way forward concerning the Life Skills Program. Overview When Lorna arrived at the meeting place, she found a few people wearing masks and a jerrycan of water and soap. They were welcomed by the chairman and after a few minutes of waiting most of the committee members had arrived. They started by an opening prayer and then the meeting commenced. Lorna greeted the community members and thanked them for following the ministry of Healths guidelines towards covid and that even though the measures are tough and the times are hard to keep doing whatever is being told to us and pray that one day everything will be okay. They talked about Covid and the way they were putting the guidelines into practice, they also looked at some of the signs and symptoms and interestingly one man asked whether covid had a treatment and how long it takes for someone to die. Lorna mentioned there was no specific treatment but whatever prevents itself is what they treat at least that’s what is being done in Uganda with a lot of immunity boosting and a lot of vitamin C. About dying , Lorna asked the community what do they think and they said it depends on ones immunity and how soon they go to the hospital after the signs show. On vigilance of any new member in the village, they said there is no way any new person passes the chairman’s house or without any community member notifying him. They cried about poverty and their markets being closed and how hard it is even to sell a hen to someone because they will say they don’t have money. They said government gave food to the central region but would have also considered them in the villages. We talked about other challenges going on around the village like Cases of children’s behavior, family relations, gender roles n responsibilities and education of the children in the villages. They were very sad that their children are loosing out compared to those in the cities. They cannot afford radios yet they have no food, about the test papers issued by the government barely any of them know how to read and so no one knows whether the children are understanding or not.Lorna gave them some ideas to try to see that the children do not miss out , she encouraged them to encourage their children to revise, make groups of 5 of the same class and read and discuss together. They asked Lorna if possible to take this report back to the district so that their children are not left out. After all this , Lorna told them the reason she came was for the, to pave a way forward for the program. She asked them whether that was okay with them. They said yes they were very welcoming but were scared of the government directives of gatherings. Lorna laid out the plan to them which was to meet 7-8 people , 2 homes per day where that will be 14 or 16 people per day one hour each. They were very happy in fact they said it will work on their favor for those who always have excuses to come to the larger meeting. They said they will help with the grouping of the community. Lorna also urged them that in these groups they will have a leader who will always ensure they meet and remind themselves of the previous lesson or topic so they do not spend much time on the reviews. Conclusion Lorna thanked them for coming and encouraged the community members to continue following the government directives and wished them well.
