Notes
Alex Walyomu while in Butabira together with the sanitation committee members gathered to learn how to construct a new hand washing station as another option besides tippy taps to promote hand washing during this crucial time of COVID-19. WASH program has decided to roll out hand washing program at this moment in all the villages they are active with a goal to target all people understand the value of hand washing not only after visiting the pit latrine but at all times and are very optimistic this will work very well. Hand washing helps to prevent the spread of germs as well as coronavirus. This is a crucial moment after the government requested kibo group to help sensitize the villages about Covid-19 and what the villages can do to prevent the spread of the virus. Therefore WASH sought it as a good time to teach the people about hand washing to tackle the germs that cause diseases related to poor sanitation practices and the virus. Alex therefore had to train the sanitation committee members how to construct the stands and will be going home to home guiding people how to build them along side encouraging them to construct other sanitation facilities. Everyone that turned up to witness how to construct this type of stand liked it better than the tippy tap type because they believe this is easy to maintain and use. The sanitation committee together with WASH staff will continue to guide people how to build this type of stand in their homes during their weekly visits in the village as well as guiding them to construct the other facilities. WASH plans to distribute a small jerrycan in each home in the village to promote hand washing in the villages. The village chairman and the sanitation committee members appreciated Alex and kibo for the new idea and promised to help their village going to each home teaching them how to construct this hand washing stand after getting the idea from Alex. Alex plans to go back in this village next Wednesday to continue weekly follow ups together with the sanitation committee members.
