Notes
Tom made a visit to kalalu village to check on facility constructions and sanitation improvements. He was joined by 6 committee members and together they moved around the village checking on facility constructions and improvements. They started off from the chairman’s home and they moved to the trading center toward the lower section. In he trading center they found two new latrines under construction as well as some shower facilities. In one home, they encouraged the resident to construct a better dish rack as well as a better shower facility. They also encouraged the residents on the construction of hand washing stands. On the issue of hand washing stand construction, the committee members encouraged the residents to prepare bricks so that they can guide them on how to construct the stand. In one home they found when a resident was constructing a kitchen for the home. Tom and the committee members encouraged the resident to also improve on the shower facility as well as it was below standard. In one of the committee members home, they found when he had constructed a hand washing stand. The committee members advised him on how to improve or to construct a new shower as well as improving on the latrine. His neighbor had finished a new latrine but was below standard. The committee members advised the resident to demolish the latrine structure and construct a better one with better logs and walls. On the lower section, they found three new latrines and the committee members advised them on roofing the latrines so that they can last longer. In three homes, there was open defecation. Tom and the committee members advised the residents to start on the digging of pits so that they can improve on their sanitation. One of the men in one of the homes said he was going to pick up the pick axes and start on the pit. Another resident said he was going to start on the hand washing stand. After Tom appreciated the committee members and left for jinja. They also said they would continue with the work of sensitizing fellow residents on the issue of sanitation and hygiene.
