Notes
Tom made a visit to Mpumiro village to check on facility construction and sanitation improvements. When he arrived in the village, he was joined by three committee members and before they started moving around, they shared about the progress of the program in the village. They shared of some new improvements as well as some challenges. Of the challenges they shared that many residents are not really putting in much emphasis in the contribution of money for the iron sheets. On this issue, one committee member blamed it on the chairman whom he said does not move around the village asking and encouraging residents on this particular issue. The chairman also said when the program of iron sheets had just started, some people discouraged residents that they were going to steal their money. So discouraged many residents from contributing. Tom advised the committee members to get one person responsible for the iron sheets and that he needs to move with the chairman in the village encouraging and writing the name of whoever is interested and after he needs to always make a follow up on those residents. Tom also said he will be encouraging residents on the same issue as he does the follow ups. After that discussion, they started moving around the village. They moved from the chairman’s home towards buyoboya village. Along the way they found a new pit being dug and herr they encouraged the resident to use better materials when constructing. In another home they found when the resident had just roofed his latrine and plastered it. Tom thanked the resident for constructing a good Latrine for his home. They also encouraged residents on the construction of hand washing stands. As they continued moving around, the chairman was called together with the two committee members to a land conflict that was happening on the lower section in the swamp. This issue was also drawing many residents from their homes to go and witness what was happening. At this point Tom had to allow the chairman and the two men to leave and therefore because there was no one Tom would continue to move with and even residents were not in their homes, Tom decided to leave for jinja.
