Notes
Tom and the police officer made a,visit to the village to check on sanitation and hygiene improvements. They first had a meeting with the chairman of the village and two committee members to discuss about the level of sanitation in the village. The committee members said that their has been some improvement in latrine construction but the challenge has been for the construction of hand washing stands. The police officer advised the chairman to step up his efforts in sensitizing his village about community improvements in sanitation and hygiene especially through the construction of hand washing stands to promote hand washing in his village. The chairman also said he will meet with his committee and share more about how try will be moving around the village promoting sanitation and hygiene. After the meeting, they moved around the village. They moved to the lower section towards the upper section. In one home of a recently married couple, they found a new pit that has recently been dug. The resident has already constructed a roof for the latrine. Tom and the committee members advised him on how to construct a better floor and building the wall. They also advised him on other facilities. His neighbor is also constructing a new pit for his Latrine. Tom and the committee members advised the resident to add in more depth to about 20ft. They also advised on how to construct it. The committee members advised on the construction of hand washing stands and improve on their hand washing. In other homes on the lower section, they advised them on the construction of dish racks as well as the construction of hand washing stands. In one home, they found when the resident had collected bricks for the construction of hand washing stands. He was also advised on fixing the dish rack so that it does not fall. On the home in one section in the upper section of the village, they found when the latrine was constructed on but only roofing was remaining. It was also good to see that the resident had already constructed the roof for the latrine and was yet to put it on the structure. Tom and the committee members advised the resident to also construct the hand washing stands and dish racks. In one home they found when the resident had made bricks and was waiting for them to dry so that to start on the construction of the latrine. He was advised to be working on other facilities as he waits on the bricks to dry. After moving around, the police officer and Tom encouraged the chairman and the committee members to take further steps in reaching out to the community residents about sanitation and hygiene improvements with emphasis on the construction of hand washing stands.
