Healthy and Safe Kitchens
Suzan went to the village to follow up on the maintenance of the healthy and safe kitchens facilities such as the stove usage, smearing of the buildings and the construction of the high risen firewood stands in the kitchens. It was quite a while since she last went there, and when she got there, she was warmly welcomed by some group members who participated in the kitchens program. They sat down together and discussed about the progress for the program, one of the group leaders said that everything was moving on well in the entire village and almost each member had maintained their facilities. He suggested they walk through the village and visit a few homes so as to check on different facilities. Together they began walking while monitoring different facilities and it was observed that most members had smeared all their buildings and were cooking on their fuel efficient stoves. Each member visited that day, praised the new stoves saying how it improved on their lives. They reported that they no longer suffered from smoke inhalation which caused different diseases, no more burns and it consumed less firewood. Some men were found roofing their kitchens and when asked, they said it was their responsibility to see that they repaired and constructed all their buildings while their wives did less work like cooking and taking care of the children and then smearing their buildings. Suzan thanked the members for maintaining their facilities and encouraged them to continue with the same teamwork spirit and then wished each other a happy stay.
