Notes
Tom and the health assistant of Buyanga sub county made a visit to the village of kalalu to check on sanitation and hygiene improvements with emphasis on the construction of hand washing stands. When they arrived in the village, they were welcomed by the committee members who waiting at the primary school. They had a briefing about the program in the village from the committee members who said many residents were embracing the program and were constructing the hand washing stands. As the emphasis of the month, Tom and the health assistant emphasized the importance of hand washing to the committee members and encouraged them to also teach and sensitize the rest of the village. After the brief meeting, the health assistant and Tom requested to visit the section of the village where the vice chairman comes from. This is after residents and committee members were complaining about him of and his relatives that they are the ones really not moving fast and steadily with the program. As they moved towards the vice chairman’s home, they passed many homes and they encouraged them on the digging of pits and construction of latrines. Four homes along the way were digging and each home had constructed the hand washing stand but none were plastered. Tom encouraged the residents to plaster the hand washing stands so that they meet the standards. At the vice chairman’s home, they found his son had started on a new pit for a new latrine as well as the vice chairman. In the homestead of 4 homes, no home had a hand washing stand, latrine, dish rack, shower facility. The latrine they were using was a temporary structure they had put up. The health assistant was unhappy about the state of sanitation and hygiene in the vice chairman’s home but encouraged him to work hard to improve so that he can be an exemplary leader in the village.
