Notes
Alex visited Butabira village to continue with the weekly follow ups in the community while encouraging the village to improve on their sanitation and hygiene standards. Alex is mostly focusing on the part of hand washing and he distributed some hand washing Jerrycans to residents that have completed constructing the hand washing stands. Many people have really embraced this new idea and more than 60 households have constructed these stands in their homes. Every home feels proud of what they have done with this hand washing stand and only the people that completed this stand received a hand washing jerrycan from Alex. Everyone that gets this jerrycan quickly runs to start using it and also he/ she is encouraged to only use it for this purpose and never be tempted to use it for other purposes like fetching water from the borehole as Alex would withdraw it from whoever diverts from the original plan. Alex has so far handed out 30 Jerrycans to the homes that have constructed these stands. In the homes visited, Alex observed that the other sanitation facilities are also seen being worked on like two new pit latrines were under construction. Alex together with the sanitation committee continued to encourage and guide the village on the standards. Many of the people are roofing their kitchens and pit latrines with papyrus from the big swamp they have in the village. There is a gain a big out cry from the village as their borehole again broke down and are asking where to get help to fix it again. This borehole almost breaks down after every two weeks and all the times the village come together to temporarily fix it. The long term solution is to have all the pipes, rods, cylinder and head assembly changed. However Kibo can’t tackle this part now since the village hasn’t yet met the required standards before kibo group can partner with them to repair this borehole. Alex encouraged the village chairman and water user committee to work together, call the hand pump mechanic to come look at it and raise some funds to get it back to work so that the village can again access drinking water for some time. Alex is very optimistic that this village will meet their goal of having everyone have hand washing facility in the village and also other facilities are likely to have a very high percentage.
