Notes
Tom made a visit to Namulu village to meet with the village leaders and discuss with them about kibo and its intention in the village. He went with the health assistant of Namutumba sub county. During the meeting, the chairman was very happy to have Kibo in its village. He said he has been hearing of kibo in other villages and the good work kibo is doing. Tom addressed the meeting after the chairman and the committee welcomed them. Tom mentioned of the Wash program and what it does in the village. He also asked about the water situation. The chairman of the village said that the village was not soo good with the sanitation and hygiene as some residents don’t have facilities. He also said that they have a population of 330 homes with one operational borehole. He said sections of the village have to get water at different periods of the day to avoid overcrowding around the borehole but he also said that the time spent to get water at the current borehole is very long. He said the other borehole was broken and that residents are not using it. He said the cylinder is broken, water gets dirty after a rain storm and also earthworms are pumped with the water and seen in jericans. Tom encouraged the committee members to work together with kibo to help their village in sanitation and hygiene improvements. Tom did not make any promises regarding fixing the well or providing a new well but emphasized the importance of improving the sanitation and hygiene of the village. The health assistant thanked kibo for the work it’s done on Namutumba village in promoting sanitation and hygiene and encouraged the village leaders of Namulu village to work with kibo to improve their lives through sanitation and hygiene. The mayor of Nalubabwe trading center which is a part of Namulu village also spoke of the challenges that the trading center had in promoting sanitation and hygiene. He said because of the mobile market that is operated in that center every Tuesday, there is a very big problem of open defecation every market day due to the lack of a public latrine. He requested the health assistant to lobby for them a public latrine from the district. He also spoke of the sandy soils in the center. Tom later went to the borehole which he found dormant and nonfunctional. He took some pictures before he left for jinja.
