Notes
Harriet and Tape went to Naibowa village to guide participants as they build stoves on their own. They also planned to follow up on smearing and stove usage especially those ones with dry stoves. They reached in the village and found when the participants of group C this time had gathered at the meeting place where a demonstration of removing banana stems from the previously built stoves was to be carried out. They told kibo staff that they sat down as all the participants in Naibowa village and agreed that kibo staff should meet with group C and guide them how to practically remove banana stems from stoves because they felt that they had not yet mastered the skill. Kibo staff asked the participants to bring a shovel and a panga that they were to use on that day. They asked them to take out all the banana stems that were used during the process of stove building. The participants failed on this because they removed other banana stems but left a banana stem in the hole that takes out smoke. they corrected their mistakes and told them that they should always ensure that they remove all the five banana stems that are used during the process of stove because if they leave one it will affect the effectiveness of the stove. For example if the banana stems in not taken out from the vent it will affect the smoke venting out the kitchen thus the stove being ineffective. Kibo staff also encouraged the participants to always use the stoves that kibo staff removed banana stems in order to guide them. After this kibo staff asked the participants to smear the stove and the entire kitchen for them to look neat and be effective. They also asked the participants to keep on practicing because practice makes perfect. Kibo staff later asked the Chairperson of the Healthy and Safe kitchen program in the village to walk with her as she checks on smearing progress and stove usage. It was observed that some people with dry stoves have started cooking on them on daily basis and this was evidenced by the absence of three stones fire in the kitchen, food cooking by itself or some times children were found cooking food for the family. Also as far as smearing is concerned most people had smeared their home facilities however some said that they smeared their kitchen but they were spoiled by heavy windy rains. Kibo staff encouraged them to increase on the size of their verandah and roof it very well to protect the walls of their kitchens which can easily be spoiled by rains.
