Notes
Tom made a,visit to kalalu village to check on sanitation and hygiene improvements through facility construction. When he arrived in the village, he found when the committee members were waiting at the meeting place. They had a brief discussion about the village and which areas were still struggling. The committee members all shared about the improvements as well as some challenges especially where some residents have not yet finished their facilities. One of the committee members pointed out that one of the pick axes broke and that the red in that particular section are struggling to dig the pits. Tom encouraged the committee members to come up with some policy about such incidents when a pick axe breaks and who is responsible to fix or replace. The chairman of the village said he was going to follow up to know who exactly broke it and then he will encourage them to either is it can be fixed be fixed or pay a small amount of money and the chairman will add to buy a new pick axe. After the discussion, Tom and several committee members moved to the lower section of the village to check on facility construction and sanitation improvements. As they moved, they saw new dish racks and shower facilities that were recently constructed. The committee members encouraged the residents about constructing better shower facilities especially those that meet the standards. In one home of a resident called doctor, they found when he recently constructed his small mud structure latrine with a nice roof. The vice chairman thanked doctor for using the available resources to build a latrine for his family. They end him to construct a better shower facility as well as improve on the dish rack. In another home of Mr Basoga, the committee members and Tom were finally able to meet him in his home. For a long time he has always avoided the team yet he does not have a latrine in his home. When they arrived in his home, Tom requested him to take them to his Latrine. He showed them old pits that collapsed a couple years ago and a new pit that was not finished and finally collapsed. He also showed them poles cut for firewood as poles for the latrine. He was lying and this made the committee members upset. Tom spoke to the resident where he rebuked him for lying and encouraged him to he trustworthy and show respect to his fellow men and community leaders. The resident apologized for lying and said he was sorry. From this point, Tom and the committee members shared with him a new technique of digging pits in the sandy soils which is digging the circular pit. Tom also encouraged him not to construct on the pit before calling one of the committee members to guide him I how to construct on the circular pit. The committee members also selected for him an area they think can be able to hold a Latrine structure. In other homes, they encouraged residents to maintain their facilities well and the hygiene in their homes .
