Notes
Irene went to kalitumba to carry out a home to home visit following up on the pregnant women, breast feeding mothers and their babies, the general hygiene of the members ,nutrition and other health related issues and to continue encouraging members to come for the health lessons. Irene together with the VHT moved around to several homes, most of the homes had a visible change in the hygiene, some needed improvement, since it was a dry season most homes had less grass around and no stagnant water but some of the homes needed renovation of the roofs since the grass had fallen off and we were moving to the rain season so Irene also talked to the family members about making the houses warm and well maintained, putting out the children’s beddings to dry to avoid bugs and diseases that may come due to wet environments. Irene visited several mothers who were pregnant and some who were breast feeding. The pregnant mothers were doing well with their antenatal books filled indicating the return dates, and some had their bags prepared though there were these two teenage mothers that Irene told to look out for the different items so as to prepare for child birth but haven’t because they don’t have the money to purchase them. Rachel a 16 year old pregnant mother said her husband beat her when she went to talk to him about buying things to prepare for the baby. Her grand mother has provided her with some old bedsheets that she cut, washed, and has ironed to prepare for the baby. Sylvia the other pregnant teenage mother that Irene gave a mama kit stays with her husband with whom they move digging in people’s gardens to get food for their home and other basic needs so when Irene talked to her some time back about a mama kit and how important it is to prepare for the coming baby she said ‘I guess I will have to cut some of my old clothes so that I can get the baby’s sheets. Irene told her to try and save some money out of what they get but she told Irene that she was going to try. So when Irene went to check on what she had prepared because she is now 8 months pregnant and she said she hadn’t gotten the money yet. Irene surprised her with a mama kit with which she can add other items. Sylvia was so grateful for the kit, she thanked kibo for coming to their village, and promised Irene that she will have her baby from the hospital because she will not have any fear now that she has what they require. Irene continued to move to other homes and she also got to meet a baby who was born with a disability his parents say he is two years but cannot crawl, or move himself which is called flaccid paralysis they have moved to several hospitals and traditional herbalist but there is no change so they requested Irene to help them and take the baby to a big hospital for examination. Irene though encouraged them not to give up on the baby because children are a blessing from God, she also counseled them on proper feeding and hygiene for the baby so as not to get infections. With that Irene continued to several homes and informed them of the next lesson.
