Notes
Alex and Enock were in Maliga Village to conduct hand washing triggering. Having postponed this activity on the 12/04/2021, it was rescheduled on this day. The village attendance was fair with about 55 people in attendance. Alex and Enock told the community members the importance of hand washing in ensuring good sanitation and hygiene in the village. About three years ago, Wash program conducted sanitation and hygiene program encouraging all people to dig pit latrines, rubbish pits, dish racks and kitchens . This was before WASH came up with this new idea of hand washing stands. It was then decided that this be rolled out in all the old villages where hand washing wasn’t taught. The village leaders were very happy that Kibo group has always thought about them and all the people that attended the meeting appreciated to be encouraged by kibo once again and why hand washing was very important. Alex and Enock demonstrated to the village members how important we all need to keep our hands clean and the need to wash our hands with soap. Three community members, two men and a woman volunteered to demonstrate washing hands with soap and without soap to show the difference. It was observed that hands washed with soap proved more important than without soap in that a lot of dirt was seen in water washed with soap and yet water without soap seemed more clear demonstrating that if hands are washed without soap, dirt and germs remain in our hands and will continue to suffer from diseases related to poor sanitation and hygiene standards. The village members that attended the meeting also witnessed that if our hands are not properly washed, the old people put the lives of the little children in danger. For the breast feeding mothers if their hands are not washed with soap or ash, you will transfer the germs to the child and if you touched food without washing hands, germs are transferred to the food and diseases related to poor hygiene continue in that chain. More illustrations were conducted by Alex and Enock to show to the community that washing our hands is that very important like wiping feaces while cleaning the children and our selves should be followed with hand washing with soap after visiting the pit latrine. A new hand washing stand design by Kibo group was then demonstrated to show the community how it’s constructed different from the tippy taps and the community members liked this new design from kibo group as it is more long lasting and more sustainable compared to the tippy taps. The hand washing stand demo was constructed at the village health facility where many people gather to receive treatment. A team of 4 people were selected by the village to spear head this program of hand washing in the village and the construction of tippy taps. A total of 50 hand washing Jerrycans were taken to the village by Alex and Enock and the condition was that every member present at the hand washing triggering would get one Jerrycan after constructing a stand in his/ her home. The active kibo program in the village will continue to follow up on this program and and as well WASH will plan to go back and evaluate the program of hand washing in the village and deliver more hand washing Jerrycans in the village.
