Notes
Irene went to Igerera B to teach about breastfeeding and complementary feeding, challenges and solutions to breastfeeding challenges, and to introduce the nutrition lesson. The lesson started with a word from the VHT who invited the chairman to say a word to the members because he was going some where else for the meeting. The chairman thanked kibo for the soap given to them in the previous lesson and for the continued support towards the development of their village and asked kibo to continue bringing more programs to their village. The members made a review of the previous lesson then Irene asked the members the meaning of breastfeeding. Breastfeeding is the normal way of providing babies with the nutrients they need for growth and development through breast milk. Irene continued to say that Virtually all mothers can breastfeed, provided they are in good health condition, accurate information, and the support of their family, the health care system and society at large. On addition to that, Colostrum, the yellowish, sticky breast milk produced at the end of pregnancy is recommended as the perfect food for the newborn and feeding should be initiated within the first hour after birth. And exclusive breastfeeding is recommended upto 6 months of age, with continued breastfeeding along with appropriate complementary foods upto two years of age or beyond. Then Irene further asked the members what the best foods for complementary feeding are so the members suggested pumpkin, Irish potatoes, bananas, carrots, among other. Some of the challenges to breast feeding were discussed and the members gave poor feeding which leads to low milk production, lack of basic needs, lack of experience and support from the family members among others. Solutions given were family support, proper lessons to be given during antenatal, follow up from the hospitals and sensitization to create awareness on foods that stimulate breast milk among others. After the discussion on which food is best for supplementing Irene discussed the a little on how to make different food combinations which are highly nutritious for babies and then requested that the lesson on nutrition and balanced diet should be the next to be discussed. After the lesson the chairman LC 5 said a word to the community members about the benefits of having knowledge on health issues encouraging the members to mobilize others to come for the meeting. He also said his visit was to check on the saving groups in the village and he is grateful that he has found the members active in the lesson, he also thanked kibo for creating awareness to the villages and encouraged them to go ahead.
