Notes
Ida went to Maliga to teach about early marriage and bride price. She asked the community to tell her what they think that causes early marriage and why they sell their girls. Kasinga said that poverty is the first cause of early marriage. When parents don’t have school fees, girls decide to get married than loitering. Mumbeda said that some girls don’t pick what is taught (slow learners) that makes a girl child feel negative about school. Fida said that long distances have contributed a lot to early marriage. Girls get tired of walking and are diverted from their goal by boys. Nabirye Mutesi said that parents failing to provide necessities needed like sanitary towels, books and pens etc. Kalinaki said that “envy” girls tend to envy many things which they cannot get from their parents so this reason has also contributed a lot towards early marriage. Hamiddu said that some religions (Muslims) give away girls at a young age for marriage. They marry the girls at the age of twelve! Ida asked again what can they do with such issues to reduce early marriage. Namumbya said that parents must take their responsibilities and provide all that is needed for children to go to school. Fred said that the government must put tight laws to deal with boys who mislead girls and divert them from their goals. Ida thanked the members for giving such great ideas but parents too must know the values of education and the dangers that might arise from early marriage. She also told them that many young girls have died in labor because of being young. They thanked Kibo for teaching them life lessons that will help them change and the entire village
