Irene went to Ituba Namalowe to teach about maternal child and infant health, basically the meaning, causes of death in pregnant ,during delivery, after delivery and in children below the age of five years of age, benefits of antenatal care, demonstration on a mama kit,and benefits of postnatal and post abortion care. The meeting started with a word a word of prayer led by one of the members,a word from the chairman who thanked all the members for turning up for the lesson, thanking kibo for the lessons which have changed the behavior and perceptions of the community members as regards health issues and also asked the members to mobilize and inform other members about the health lessons. The chairman invited the VHT who still thanked the members for their turn up apologizing on behalf of the other members who didn’t turn up that since it was a Friday and majority are Moslems most of them had gone for prayers in different places, he then invited Irene to discuss the lesson of the day. Irene started by thanking the members for their turn up, a reminder on smearing and proper maintenance of their facilities like the latrines, houses, kitchens by cleaning, smearing, and proper ventilation to avoid them from rain damage. She also encouraged them them to plant plenty of food, vegetables, and cereals since it was a rain season so that their homes can have plenty to harvest when the harvest time comes, not forgetting to keep their children warm to avoid infections that come with the cold weather like pneumonia in babies. Irene made a review of the previous lesson asking the members some of the things discussed there after she introduced the lesson of the day as maternal child and infant health, asked the members what they understand from the words mentioned in the lesson of the day. Aisha said it means studying about mothers, babies and other children and on addition to that Irene said Improving the wellbeing of mothers, infants, and children because their wellbeing determines the health of the next generation and can help predict future challenges for the families, and the community. Irene then asked the members the importance of discussing about pregnancy, labour life after child birth? Because women carry the pregnancy said Fatima, women are more at risk during that period and need special care, and on addition to that Irene said because Pregnancy can provide an opportunity to identify existing health risks in women and to prevent future health problems for women and their children. Irene then discussed some of the health risks like ,heart diseases, genetic conditions, Sexually transmitted diseases, malnutrition, severe malaria, among others. It’s always important to go for antenatal care so that some of these health risks can be detected Irene advised while discussing the benefits of antenatal care, blood grouping, knowing the health status of your spouse, among others, Irene also explained the importance of having a mama kit as one prepares for delivery and with this she explained each item found in a mama kit encouraging mothers to at least prepare the most important things that they can not provide them in the hospital.with benefits of postnatal care, getting to detect infections setting in,state of the baby whether feeding well or needs help, knowing the cause of the abortion Incase it was spontaneous, counseling and guidance on the next pregnancy and advise on family planning.
