Notes
Enock made a visit to this community to trigger in hand Washing using the new approach from kibo Wash program. When he reached he went to the chairman’s home where the meeting was going to take place. He found some people who are waiting, they welcome me and we walked around 10 homes to check on the maintenance and sanitation facilities as we waited for more members to come for the triggering session. After we walked back to start the meeting, we found when there are about 30 people waiting. The chairman of the village opened the meeting by asking the secretary of the village Mr kamadi and after the chairman introduced me to the residents as we waited for more residents to come for the meeting. They gave Enock an opportunity since they where eagerly waiting about the new program of hand washing. He first posed to the a question asking them to show there hands to their immediate neighbors in the meeting, then after asked them some of the importance’s of washing hands. The reason as to why he asked such questions he wanted to know if the residents in this community have ever heard about the challenges and importance of hand washing. After he introduced the program as taught the the core values of hand washing, made a demonstration where he asked the community members to select volunteers to come in front to demonstrate how to was hands with out soap, then wash hands with soap. He taught them about the many challenges and bad practices as well as bad behaviors of not washing hands visiting the latrine and not washing hands, whipping babies and serving food for to the family but not washing hands with soap or even breast feeding, peeling eggs for babies and feeding them without washing hands and many more. The community members were so impressed with the lessons of hand washing. He continued using the lessons from the curriculum of hand washing so that the people an understanding the core values of using soap to wash hands. They embraced the program and willing to change. After the lessons, he taught them how to construct a hand washing stand where a volunteer and builder Mr Waiswa promised to help those who can’t construct to also build for them good hand washing stands. We handed the chairman 50 jerrycans to the chairman and committee to keep as they will give a jerrycan to every home which completes to constructing new hand washing stands.
