Healthy and Safe Kitchens
Notes
Harriet,Tape,Alex Bamulumbye,Alex Walyomu, together with the Community development officer of Namwendwa subcounty and the water engineer went to Ndalike village to commission the borehole and stoves. This was a joint trip for WASH and the Healthy and safe kitchen program. They reached in the village and found the participants eagerly waiting at the meeting place. The meeting begun with an open prayer that was led by pastor Batuli Charles who thanked the lord for providing journey mercies to kibo staff when ever they go to their village. After the prayer then kibo staff together with the government officials and local leaders present walked around the community to see what kibo has helped them to achieve. all the homes had the sanitation home facilities and were being used this was evidenced by the absence of open defecation. Also most homes had fuel efficient stoves that were being used on daily basis. This was evidenced by the absence of the traditional three stones fire and finding food cooking by itself or being attended by children. Most homes were well smeared and stocked firewood to use during time of scarcity which was a sign of showing that the community loved/ valued the stoves and other home facilities that kibo empowered them to put in place. After the home visit they all settled for a meeting. The chairperson LC1 welcomed every who had turned up for the meeting. He said that kibo had done a lot of development programs in his village like Mvule community development program where kibo gave them trees and goats per member, water sanitation and hygiene which changed they life through reducing diseases related to poor sanitation and hygiene because every one in the community has a pit latrine and other home facilities. He added that there is no more open defecation unlike in the past before kibo started working with them. He said that kibo has done a lot in their village and he invited the chairperson of the Healthy and safe kitchen program to continue sharing what kibo had done in their village. The Chairperson for Healthy and safe kitchens program Sarah Baseke said that ; on behalf of the participants she was very grateful to kibo for empowering their families through the Healthy and safe kitchen. She said that the program empowered them with a skill of building fuel efficient stoves and now they have forty three stoves in their village and they plan to scale to the neighboring communities since they learnt how to build stoves. Sarah also said because of the stoves they no longer experience cases of fire accidents since fire is contained inside the stove, reduced smoke in their kitchen thus low cases eyes and chest diseases resulting from exhaling smoke. The program also empowered men or sensitized them on the importance of helping their wives to do domestic work and they now work together this has promoted more love and mutual understanding between families. Sarah added that the program has promoted teamwork and unity among themselves because they built stoves as a group in every ones home. This encouraged some people who had misunderstandings among themselves to settle them because during the lessons they learnt the value of working together to achieve development. She said that some people who used not to go others homes they now worked and ate together whenever they were building stoves. She also said that the program has helped them to cook food fast by using less firewood unlike the traditional open flames which would cook very slow, use a lot of firewood that would force women to spent a lot of time in the forest looking for firewood. Sarah also said because of the stoves they no longer experience cases of fire accidents since fire is contained inside the stove, reduced smoke in their kitchen thus low cases eyes and chest diseases resulting from exhaling smoke. This has also improved on marriage relationship since the men also can sit in the kitchen cook food for the family because the stoves have created a very conducive atmosphere. The. Kibo staff Harriet thanked the participants for team and hard work. She also thanked the men for having allowed their wives to participate in the program. She also thanked the men who actively participated in the healthy and safe program that made it successful. She encouraged them to continue working together. Kibo staff also told them because of their hard work kibo has brought for them community big saucepans that they can use as a group and soap per as a sign of appreciating their hard work and encouraging the to stay working together .kibo staff then handed over these incentives to the participants as the government officials and local leaders were watching. She also told the community to think of more other than that they can add on these two saucepans that can lead to development. The community was very excited and thanked kibo for such a great love they have always shown to them. The community development thanked kibo for all the programs it has implemented in this village and encouraged the community to sustain those programs. She also said that the government will always support communities which are organized and have started doing something on their own. She also encouraged them to always visit her at the subcounty so that she can guide them how to get government community development funds. The meeting ended with a meal that the community prepared to share between kibo, the government officials and the community because they were celebrating success.
