Notes
Today’s meeting started with Lorna meeting the children. They were very excited to be in a class setting since it’s been long. Lorna greeted them and we they sung songs and later started the class. Lorna asked them what have they been doing, what have they learnt during this covid period?. Some said digging, others said rearing animals , others washing clothes, cooking food, brick laying among others. Lorna mentioned who is ready to go back to school now and they all raised up their hand. Waiswa a primary 5 pupil asked when the schools were to be opened but Lorna told them to be patient anytime and to be preparing themselves , books among other things. After here we learnt about personal hygiene and what it entails. Different children gave different ideas of what it means like bathing, having clean clothes, washing , brushing, trimming nails among others. We also looked at general sanitation and the importance of proper sanitation in a home. They mentioned what a clean home should look like while giving several examples and Elvis said that when a persons home is not clean, they become the laughing stock or no one gives them respect. We looked at how to keep ourselves and homes clean. Lorna also encouraged the children to be disciplined and listen to their parents. After the children, the parents also came to the meeting and although they mentioned that they had a funeral, they asked Lorna to teach those that had come and then continue from there next week. We carried out a preview of the previous topic which was on HIV/AIDS and thereafter Lorna introduced the new topic Communication Skills. Lorna asked the community what communication is. And they mentioned where people are working together in harmony. Lorna mentioned that was right and added it is the proper sending and receiving of messages with effective feedback that means if it is one sided it is not communication because both parties need to hear from each other. We also looked at means of communication like phones, drums, hands by clapping, whistles, horns, letters, Computers , televisions, radios among others. After here we looked at types of communication non verbal and verbal and we looked at the different ways we communicate through each. Non verbal where we looked at communication using signs and different examples of how we use our body parts to communicate were displayed. Like our eyes, hands, winking, using the mouth, hands pointing, shrugging shoulders, fist making among others. We learnt that when we learn how to interpret these signs, we will learn how to communicate better and harmoniously within our families, in our communities and with others. Because they wanted to go for burial , Lorna spoke briefly about Importance of communication like it promotes unity for example in the community where everyone is able to express themselves and listen to each other many challenges are solved or overlooked. It creates friendship / promotes friendship. She gave them a homework that they will be starting from here next week. As we move on to communication styles of Attack and Avoid.
