Notes
Lorna and Manuela went to Ikumbya village where they were met with women, men and the children alike. They were welcomed with songs and after waiting some minutes, the meeting started. The secretary read the Agenda of the day which started with an opening prayer, remarks from the chairman of the village, the chairman Kibo group thereafter Lorna and Manuela were invited to teach. Lorna was the first to teach where Lorna asked the community members to remind her what lesson they learnt about previously and one person mentioned that we learnt about life stories and Lorna asked if there was anyone else who wanted to share but no one so Lorna volunteered and shared her life story of how her father fell ill when they were in school and suddenly all his friends disappeared and yet they had to study with only one parent fending for all her siblings but thank God they all graduated. It taught Lorna life could change anytime and suddenly the luxuries one has can be gone. We worked hard, trusted God and we all made it with us all having jobs. If we hadn’t trusted God, helped each other and worked hard, we wouldn’t get this far. After her story we looked at role models in detail since last week we had just introduced it. Lorna mentioned a role model is someone one admires in their lives and asked that the community members who these people were in their lives. About 4 men mentioned who their role models were and why for example Isabirye mentioned of a man in the community who has every type of animal at his farm and is very wealthy and a peoples person and he said he would want to be like him. Lorna mentioned with role models who are far you can admire from a far and try to emulate them but those in the community, we can go visit them and talk to them and ask for advise where necessary to better ourselves. Another mentioned of a man who has a lot of land very wealthy and he too admires and wants to become like them. Lorna mentioned that we need to sacrifice a lot to be like our role models. An old lady mentioned that her role model is one of the community members in today’s meeting and mentioned Jane and that with everything she has been through she is doing well sleeping in a well roofed iron sheet house and her dream too is to sleep in a well roofed house but now she is old and has bad luck but Lorna and Manuela mentioned that it is still very possible for her to still build herself such a house. She asked the parents to ask their children whom their role models are and work towards being like or better than them. Manuela then taught on Goal setting where She asked what a goal is in Lusoga and they mentioned what it was. She also told them a brief life story of herself and thereafter mentioned Life story, role models and goal setting go hand in hand therefore after looking at the previous lessons , we now get to set goals for ourselves. Manuela asked Lorna to distribute the goals worksheet to every community member . She started by mentioning there 2 types of goals long term and short term , where short term is a 3-6 months period for example one can plant beans and harvest in 3 months , sit for an exam in those months but there are long term goals which are set for 1 year and beyond. She asked the community members like what goals?, one person mentioned building a house and Manuela mentioned that is right. She then asked to look at an example and asked any community member to volunteer what their goal is and Aisha mentioned to become a teacher. Manuela mentioned that okay let us all use Aishas example as study and we looked at what Aisha needs to achieve her goals, who does she need to go to for help, what are something’s that may disrupt her from reaching her goals among others . They mentioned bad peer groups, parents who don’t want to pay her fees, poverty among others. Manuela mentioned that in life it is very important for one to have a goal in life because goals make us work hard to achieve what we want to achieve in life. She mentioned that there are several challenges but these push us ahead and that one should not give up despite the setbacks. She mentioned it can be the same with long term goals. Like marrying a wife, studying up to Makerere. She mentioned there 2 months remaining for children to go back to school how prepared are they and what goals , plans have they made. A plan leads one to their goal. Lorna added that each one should have a goal as an individual, family and community at large. After this the secretary came back up and thanked Lorna and Manuela for the lesson and asked that they continue because the lessons are important for everyone . Lorna and Manuela left them with homework on Early pregnancies and early marriages.
