Notes
Harriet went to Butabira village to teach and follow up on kitchen safety and food handling safety . She reached in the village un expectedly and started walking home to home inspecting stove and how the families arrange utensils in their kitchens. She concentrated in the lower section of the village and asked one of the community members Beth to walk with her to the homes of the participants who had got stoves especially in the lower section of the village. She found when most of the participants were not in their homes, they were still in the gardens and this gave her an opportunity to find out their day to day life. Most of the participants had started cooking on their stoves on daily basis this was evidenced by finding food cooking by itself or being attended by children. She also found some participants who had dry stoves and had not yet started cooking on them and kibo staff encouraged them to start cooking on their stoves to avoid cases of fire accidents that may be caused by open flames. Also there are some homes that had scattered dirt utensils in the kitchen, Harriet taught them the importance of keeping clean utensils and arrange them well in the kitchen to enable the kitchen look neat and prevent flies that may be attracted by dirty utensils leading to diseases infection. The participants felt so ashamed and promised to always clean utensils and organize their homes before they go to attend to their gardens. Also some participants had not stocked firewood on their storage stands and Harriet encouraged them to do so.
