By the end of the lesson, the community knows their roles towards their children

It is an interesting season since most people are in their gardens harvesting peanuts. When Lorna reaches the villages, it took quite some time before the community members started to come for the meeting. Lorna almost counseled the meeting but when they were about 10 community members we decided to go ahead with the meeting.We started the meeting with N opening prayer by Tumuhaise which was later followed by an opening remark from the chairman. He greeted the community members and thanked Kibo for sending them another program as he reported to Lorna and the community members of Suzan and Tapes visit. After this he also went ahead and told the community members that Life skills lessons are helping them as a village and he mentioned he does not know about others but for him as him the program is helping him for example to know how to manage anger, importance of relationships, communication among others. He asked the community members to take these lessons seriously and also impart them in their children for a better generation. After his opening remarks, he invited Lorna to teach them. Lorna thanked them for cooperating with Kibo staff Suzan and Tape and mentioned to them Kibo is one and that if they see them they have seen Kibo. After here we went through a review of the previous lesson on gender roles and we were able to remind ourselves on some of them like cooking, building home facilities, buying food, digging, grazing , collecting firewood, fetching water among others. After here, Lorna mentioned that we were going to add on top of that gender roles and responsibilities towards our Children. We looked at the father first where we saw that the father should be the role model to his children in a home. We saw that whatever he does is what the family will follow. He needs to be exemplary to his children for example not drinking, coming home late, picking up fights with neighbors , disrespecting their mother among others. He should therefore be a role model to his children. A father should be involved in the wellbeing of their children; health wise, education wise .To check with the children daily to know how they are doing , what is bothering them. Teach them how to make decisions and why it’s important to make those decisions. Lorna gave a simple example like get 2 fruits a mango and orange and ask them to pick one and ask them why they picked a particular one. For instance if they picked the mango and not the orange they would say a mango is easy to eat like wash it and go ahead and just eat it , it had one seed, very nutritious while the orange one needs to peel , there many seeds involved and vice versa. Give them a scenarios and ask them to give you their response and defend their answers. Other roles to instill discipline, protect their children at all costs, stand up for them, provide basic needs, make time for their children among others. For the mothers we looked at nurturing their children to grow up into responsible members of society. Teaching them mannerisms, socialization , love their children the same, act as the lawyer when children are involved into conflicting situations, call out the wrong one and praise them always for what job they have done or for taking care of a sibling well, praising them for whatever they have done right and also encourage the others or motivate them.teach them to share, perform counseling duties. Encourage love between children, love and respect heir father, and any other older person. Mothers should always watch their tongue when they are angry and speak life to their children. For example you find that one person is abusing their children that they are dumb, stupid and these can mature since words are seeds they can affect this child for the rest of their life. She urged them to praise their children every time including the big baby, their husbands. Love their father and support them, take care of their health needs. Resolve conflicts between children, neighbors, teach them to be patient, sorry, forgiving understanding among others. In conclusion, we have 5 people mention what stood out for them and also advised the parents on their role towards children. Among whom was the chairman who mentioned that they should pay attention to the needs of their children and punish where they go wrong. The chairman mentioned a story of Kagoya a 4 year old who abused him a certain way but he knew it wasn’t the child’s fault but their parents. He asked the parents not to discuss adult issues in front of their children. He asked parents of 5 children Nkenga, shafiq, Kussein, Haddija and Mudalusi to watch those children and spend time with them.
