Health lesson 14: Domestic Violence
Notes
Ida went to Bukoma C to teach about how to handle domestic violence cases. She found when some community members had gathered waiting for her. Muwumba Godfrey opened the meeting with a prayer and Ida proceeded. She asked the community members to share some ways they handle such cases. Namukose said that she takes the issue to the local leaders who will organize and call the victims for peace talks. Ida agreed with Namukose saying that it’s good to take issues to Civil courts where you might address violation of a protection order. Erima said that he walks away and comes back after some time when the anger has calmed down. Ida also gave the community members some ways to handle domestic violence cases as listed below: 1 Discuss issues and participate in the family decision making. 2. Know your role in the family and respect it. 3 Decide on money issues together. 4 Admit your mistakes. 5 Share parental responsibilities. The discussion continued between community members. Namuli said that it’s true, discussing as a family creates harmony and builds Trust .Talking about schools for the children, setting family goals and targets, praying together strengthens the family bond. Sonia talked about knowing their roles . she requested men to respect women and remember their roles. Men have abandoned their wives and children and run for other women who will ruin their plans. Erima Fred said that “accepting our mistakes leads to asking for forgiveness which will bring unity and harmony in marriage. Men never admit their mistakes but this time they promised to try and encourage those who find it difficult to say sorry.” Kaduyu said that parents must share responsibilities together because the home belongs to both. Men and women who run away from responsibilities, challenges are not serious because it won’t change anything when they disappear. At the end of the lesson, Erima Fred the chairperson thanked the community members for the good participation in the meeting and Kibo for teaching his community life lessons that have changed their lives. He continued saying that now the community members know the causes, dangers of domestic violence and also know how to handle domestic violence cases which they didn’t know. Ida concluded with a scripture from the book of Roman 12:17-21.
