Notes
Tom made a visit to kalitumba village to check on sanitation and hygiene improvements in the village as well as to hold a small meeting with the vhts about the evaluation that will be conducted soon. Tom also visited with a police officer. On arrival to the village, they first met with the vhts in which Tom shared with them about the next evaluations. In that meeting, the vhts shared about one resident in the village who has not been working to improve on his sanitation and hygiene. The name of the resident is called mr Tigawalana. The chairman of the village mr Digo also joined the vhts and Tom as he too spoke about the challenges he has faced with mr Tigawalana. After that discussion, they all decided to make a visit to mr Tigawalana‘s place where they found him. He took them to his new latrine which he is working on and there they had a discussion about his sanitation standards in his home as well as his sons. After the discussion with him, he said he will get bricks to finish his latrine as well as encouraging his sons to also dig and construct there latrine. Tom also encouraged them about the construction of other facilities like the dish racks and shower facilities. After mr Tigawalanas home, they visited the home of another resident who they found with a new latrine. He was very happy and proud of his latrine and appreciated kibo for encouraging them to improve. Like wise in many other homes they found facilities like dish racks, shower facilities being constructed. There’s also a home of a young man who is constructing a concrete and brick latrine yet he sleeps in a mud hut. When Tom asked him why he has decided to make such an investment just in a latrine rather than a house, he said that after the triggering and seeing the consequences of living in a poor sanitation and hygiene environment, he decided to work and construct a better latrine but he also said he wanted to be an example to some other young men in the village to also embrace the program of sanitation and hygiene. In one home they found an elderly man constructing a kitchen. Tom was impressed with the old man who has taken action immediately after his old kitchen collapsed. Tom thanked him for being proactive. The old man was constructing the brick wall without a trowel yet the walls were well constructed. Tom encouraged him to finish the kitchen and work on other facilities as well like the dish rack.
