Notes
Tom made a visit to kalitumba village to check on sanitation and hygiene improvements as well as facility constructions and improvements. When he arrived in the village, he was joined by the chairman of the village as well as committee members and one vht. There target for the day was to visit homes that have not yet started on the digging and construction of latrines. They started moving from the vhts place and right away headed for one home where the women have been complaining about there husband that he has failed to dig and construct for them a latrine. When they reached his home, they found the man himself and Tom requested him to lead the group to his latrine. He took the group to an open pit that is even about to fill up. Tom also called his women so that the discussion happens in there presence. When the committee members asked him why he has not yet dug and constructed a better latrine, he said it was because of other commitments and money. One of the committee members pointed out to him that for long he has never had a latrine in his home and that therefore, he needs to commit to digging one for his home. All his women pointed to the fact that they have been asking him but he has not been implementing anything. Together with the committee members, the man promised to start digging the pit while the wives also committed to helping him pull out the dirt from the pit. Both women said they were tired of being ashamed going in the open to defecate. After, they moved to other homes and there they found also some implementations. In mr Gubi’s home’s home, they found when Mr Gubi and his son Van had combined to dig one pit onto which they will construct a structure with two stalls so that they can share the pit. Mr Gubi was very ashamed to the fact that he did not want Tom to take his picture. He said that he was ashamed that the picture of him was one of a person with no latrine. Tom encouraged him to work hard so that one day he takes another picture that will show Mr Gubi with his new latrine. He said he will work hard and finish the latrine and after start on other facilities as well. His son Van has two homes yet none of his homes has a latrine. To encouraged to work with his father to finish the first one and later move to digging and constructing on the other too. After Tom shared with the committee members and the vht about the slab and iron sheet program but advised them to move around and take a list of all the residents in need and with there commitment fees. After the short meeting, Tom left for jinja.
