Notes
Tom and Nate made a joint visit to kalitumba village to check on sanitation and hygiene improvements as well as reminding the community about the upcoming triggering in hand washing session. When they arrived in the village, they reached one of the vhts place and found when the rest of the vhts had not yet gathered. They waited for a short while and later the vht suggested that they keep moving around the village and the rest of the vhts would find them along the way. They started moving and in one of the first homes visited was a home of and elderly widow who has just a pit but not yet finished. Tom requested the vht to speak to her about finishing the pit. Her neighbor has got a finished pit but said, he was harvesting rice so that he can get some money for the construction materials like cement and sand. Tom encouraged him to start preparing the pit as the rains will soon come. Like wise three other people in the same section had pits under construction. They were later joined by other committee members like Mzee silive and Mzee Kirya and together they continued moving around the village. They reached a home where they found a newly constructed latrine with bricks and mud. Tom encouraged the committee members to encourage the residents to construct latrines like the one they had found because it had all the requirements of a simple good latrine. Mr silve the treasurer for the program said he was going to start encouraging the residents and also offered to help in the construction of one of his son’s latrine. They also visited two homes one for Mr Van and his neighbor. Both had started on the construction of the latrine floor on there pits. The floor was being constructed poorly so Tom and the committee members encouraged the residents on how to construct the latrine floor. They later visited mr Gubi’s home and found still the pit not yet finished. One of the committee members encouraged him on how to construct it. In one home of mr Geoffrey, he has started digging the pit following the guidelines of mr kirya. It’s progressing well and it’s about 6ft. After Tom and Nate left for jinja.
