Notes
Today Enock and Martin went to this village to check on the progress of latrine construction, dish racks, hand washing facilities, shower areas, kitchen areas, rubbish pits, check the use of ash, encourage the residents on the importance of ash in latrines and guiding the community residents on standardization of all the facilities to avoid repeating the same mistake of constructing facilities which break in a short period of time due to poor structures, heavy rainfall hence continuous spread of diseases and poor sanitation. Enock went to the lower section to check on target homes did not have latrines in there homes during the previous evaluation survey. Ironically the 5 homes in this section which didn’t have latrines, we found them so busy constructing, building structures and some where digging latrine holes. Among those people who we found digging new latrines, there was an old lady called Asanansi Mutesi and she is about 84 years of age. Her latrine broke down due to heavy rainfall. She didn’t give up like all other widows who say they are helpless. She has learnt the importance of having a latrine and using it. Since her latrine broke down, she paid off someone to dig a latrine hole for her. In one day they dug for her 15 ft deep hole. She is planning to start constructing on and in 3 days she will have completed her new latrine. She is an inspiring lady. The rest of the community members who don’t have latrines where challenged by her. Martin went in the other upper section where he saw 4 newly build latrines although they haven’t started using them. He also challenged some of the VHTs who are not active to be exemplary and encourage the fellow residents to improve on their sanitation and hygiene.
