Notes
Enock and Martin made a trip to kagulu village to check on the progress of latrine construction, dish racks, shower areas, rubbish pits in homes and emphasizing on the proper maintenance and good sanitation. When they reached, they visited one of the chairman’s homes to meet with all the local leaders and decide which section needs more effort. We decided to first visit some homes around the trading center which are still finalizing their latrine construction and other facilities. There was a challenge in one family which didn’t have coordination amongst them self. The wife was a choosing the husband of not constructing the latrine and digging the rubbish pit. We managed to have a discussion with both of them to resolve the problem and remain the husband of his responsibilities in his family as well as encouraging the wife to work together with and improve the sanitation and hygiene. The local leaders where so happy to to see this family accepting to work together. They also continued in some homes around to continue encouraging, monitoring, teaching and sensitizing the residents to construct good standard facilities. They also demonstrated how to use ash in one of the latrine which had many flies and its sanitation wasn’t good. I was so impressed to meet one old lady called Margaret who has a new latrine in her home. They then walked in the upper section where they saw some good new dish racks, shower areas well maintained, one new pit which is still under construction. The community members in this section have greatly embraced the program and willing to change from their old behaviors of practicing open defection. Ladies are so happy because they can take showers during day and keep their personal hygiene.
