Notes
Tom made a visit to kalitumba village to check on how residents are constructing their latrines with the new iron sheets they received. Tom also checked on other facilities like the hand washing facilities. When he arrived in the village, he found that some of the committee members had gone to the sub county for a seminar about agriculture. Three of the committee members were present and therefore Tom moved with them around the village. They moved in several homes but the highlight of the day was a ho of mr Charles whom they found when he had roofed his latrine. Mr Silve one of the committee members was very impressed and thankful to see that Mr Charles now has a very nice latrine in his home. Likewise in Mr Gubi’s home they found the wife and she was also thankful. They were also able to see six other new latrines that had been roofed. Tom was also encouraging the residents to use better roofing poles so that the roof can be stronger. In one home, they found the resident (the man), for the first time was found sitting at his home with his family. He took Tom and the committee members to his newly constructed and roofed latrine where he was guided and encouraged to dig a trench around his latrine so that running water can not make its way into the pitto weaken it hence creating a way for it to collapse. The resident was very thankful for the encouragement and said he will do whatever he can to keep his latrine. He also thanked his wife while Tom and the committee members were present for also actively participating in the construction of the latrine. When he was asked what the wife contributed he said she contributed in the buying of bricks as well as mixing the mud for constructing the bricks. They also visited several other homes and encouraged them to construct their facilities as well as maintaining and improving on them.
