Notes
Enock made a visit to Kisiro village to continue checking on the progress of latrine construction, more sensitization on the core values and importance of sanitation and hygiene. When he reached, he met with the VHTs and the chairman of the trading centre who where waiting on him so that they walk around to monitor, encourage, emphasizing, evaluation, teaching, guiding some of the residents how to construct good standard facilities. We encouraged those homes with very deep pits to construct using cement and sand so that they can make good foundation base before they construct a structure on it. Some of the community members have smeared their facilities and they really look good. There has been an increase in latrine construction, usage and reduce of open defection. Most people have greatly understood the benefits of the program and taking the lead to also encourage one another. Since it’s a dry season, most people are busy in their home maintaining their facilities, roofing and replacing the old roofs with new grass. There are many new shower areas, kitchen areas which are also constructed. As we were busy walking around, we saw some new latrine houses, new pits which are still under construction. During the visit, many people called us to visit their home so we can see what’s missing and we encourage them. The local leader have also been of grate help in this community through mobilizing their fellow residents to improve on the sanitation levels. Many homes which for many years didn’t have latrines, have now built latrine and using them. Some homes had even taken 20 years without latrines in their homes, these homes have been practicing open defection but ever since they got to learn the importance of sanitation they have even built good facilities. The program has also increased confidence of many people in this community. Ladies and gentlemen who used to fear walking around due to shame or even speak in public can now walk freely and express them selves. The kids in this community have also been apart of change through digging rubbish pits, sweeping the compounds among other activities.
