Notes
When Enock and Martin visited this community, they met with the leaders and first discussed how the community is progressing with the latrines, dish racks, shower areas, kitchen areas, rubbish pit digging and usage. The leaders told us how the community members are busy working towards improving their sanitation and hygiene. After the small meeting with leaders, we walked home to home to continue encouraging the residents to dig and construct good sustainable facilities. We focused on homes which are digging new latrines, giving them ideas, guiding them how to use good materials for constructing the foundation of the latrine which will give it the strength before constructing the walls. The homes which have already constructed new latrines we taught them about the use of Ash in latrines to chase flies out and promote good sanitation inside the latrine. Martin focused his teaching on the importance of proper drainage systems on shower so that inside the shower room is kept dry and hygienically. There are many people who have greatly embraced the program and already promoting and creating a big change in their lives. There was a testimony in two families who confessed that for about 10 years they have never had a proper latrine and were using the bush around them. These people could wait for the night to fall so that they go and carry out open defecation. When we visited the small bush next to their home we saw a big pail of pup. I was glad they openly mentioned it and accepted their old behaviors. This shows the importance of triggering sessions and also the lessons we have taught these families to understand the core values of sanitation. We continued remaining the rest of the community members about the many diseases which occur due to practicing of open defection.
