Notes
During the hand washing triggering session, discussions about how hands are contaminated and practical demonstrations that show how dirty our hands are were conducted. In the discussion Tom asked to show by hands residents who had clean hands. Many raised there hands. Using a boiled egg, the three volunteers removed the shell but by the time they finished removing the shell, the eggs had brown marks which showed their hands were clean. By using water without soap and later washing with soap and comparing the water washed from the hands of the volunteers showed the residents that using soap is the best way to wash or clean hands. Tom also used ash as an alternative to washing hands if soap is not available. During the discussion about how hands are contaminated, residents suggested digging, scratching, sneezing, coughing, whipping as some of the ways through which there hands are contaminated. The emphasis was put on how touching fecal matter through whipping children and themselves contaminates their hands and later they eat the fecal matter. Women also were accused of whipping their infant babies at night in the dark with their hands and later smearing on their cloth. Tom lead them through a discussion on how such action spread diseases and later lead to death. After they also listed the diseases that they can get from not washing their hands. A hand washing stand was demonstrated and residents thanked kibo for sharing with them such lessons.

Next Visit: 2019-05-27 - Purpose: To check on Sanitation and hygiene improvements as well as facility constructions
