Notes
While in the village, Tom checked on sanitation and hygiene improvements through the construction of latrines, rubbish pits, dish racks and hand washing stands. Tom together with the committee members saw new hand washing stands on the upper section and in one home a new latrine under construction. They encouraged the residents especially those constructing the hand washing stands to add a layer of cement to protect it from the rains. There is also a new program from another organization that is selling residents sanitation-plates that increase on the hygiene of the latrine by eliminating smell as well as flies. The residents are happy about this new innovation that his organization has brought to the village. They acknowledge that it would not have been possible if it was not for kibo to first encourage them on sanitation and hygiene. They also found a new latrine that the resident has started on after the old latrine collapsed due to heavy rains. The resident said he can not afford anymore to live without a latrine after learning about the dangers of open defecation through kibo and that is why he started on the pit right after the next day. Tom and the committee members encouraged him to dig a deeper pit and construct the latrine well because he has a bigger family. The chairman and the committee members said they will soon start on encouraging residents who have lost there dish racks to termites to start on new ones soon.
