Notes
Introduction Lorna was in this village to continue with Decision making topic teaching on Causes of Early marriages and the dangers associated with it. Overview Lorna is teaching Decision Making in this village of Kigalama and is currently teaching on Early marriages. This is because there are young women in this village with children and you can easily tell that they got married at an early age. The purpose of this lesson is therefore to open the eyes of all stake holders in this community to know that early marriages, early pregnancies are not right for children especially below 18years. Lorna started by doing a review of the previous lesson causes ,dangers of early pregnancy and moved on to the topic of the day Early marriages it’s causes and dangers. The lesson was very participatory as all parties were involved the parents, girls, young mothers ,boys and the men. Lorna started by asking them if there were any girls that got married before the age of 18 years in this village and they were about hesitant but Lorna again told them it’s okay and she does not mean bad to anyone but told them that they were going to look at the causes of early marriages and she would like for them to very much participate. Mariam said that one of the causes is for the parents who don’t talk to their children and give them so much freedom, Musiramu said another cause is uneducated parents and therefore they don’t know that marrying off their children while young is wrong. Another cause mentioned was poverty, Greed, early pregnancy parents looking at their children as sources of wealth and income. Lorna also added the laxity of all stake holders which she mentioned; Religious leaders, parents as mentioned earlier, local leaders and law enforcers and said if they all would agree that marrying off children when young is wrong and play their roles well then this problem would be dealt with. Others mentioned were family honor where parents don’t want to be ashamed that their children got married off wedlock and therefore instead of living with the shame they marry off their children which is not right. This is a big challenge even with adults in our society when one gets a child outside wedlock they are not looked at the same as one who got married in wedlock therefore imagine a child in this scenario , the parents will not want to be the “talk” of the village hence to protect their “name, honor they end up marrying off their children. Under the dangers they looked at ; School dropout whereby Lorna asked the community to mention any of the children who got married off early who is in their community and went back to school. They mentioned one girl but she got pregnant and after birth the parents decided to take her back to school.Lorna said that was great and said the rest too need to be given a second chance. Risk domestic violence since they are seen as young and have no say in their relationship whatsoever, Sexual violence even outside of their will, Sexually transmitted diseases, looked down at in society and community, Poverty as they cannot get a good paying job especially for the girl child unlike their counterparts the boys/ men have chances of getting more paying jobs hence putting the girl child at a disadvantage. To mention but a few. Conclusion It was a very interesting eye opening meeting where the members kept going on and on but Lorna had to go as it was getting late. Lorna urged those who came to spread this word to those that did not and ask them to come next time.Lorna thanked them for coming and told them they will meet in a weeks time.
