Notes
Suzan, Tape and Jeska went to the upper side of the village purposely to introduce the Healthy and Safe kitchens program to the community members. When they got there, they found the members already gathered under a mango tree where the meeting was going to take place. Among the members were some of the local leaders such as the L.C.1. and the village VHT. Kibo staff was warmly welcomed to the village and and after exchanging greetings, the chairperson opened the meeting with a prayer and introduced kibo staff to the community. Suzan thanked the members for gathering that day and then introduced the program to the community by explaining the main objectives and goals and how it would benefit them. She first asked the members about the kind of stoves they used for cooking food in their kitchens where by most of them were using the three stones open flames for cooking. The members also participated in the lessons by identifying some of the challenges faced while using the three stones for cooking such as smoke inhalation because the smoke was always stuck in the kitchens, the children also got burnt easily while trying to pick some food from the saucepans, the stoves also took long hours in cooking the food yet it consumed a lot of firewood and messed up the kitchen with too much ashes scattered all over. However Tape and Jeska taught about the importance of having all the requirements needed in each home before getting a fuel efficient stove such as having a strong kitchen wall with a good roofing’s, a complete bathroom and latrine, a well dug rubbish pit and strong dish rack. This was important because it made each home look much more neater and healthy to live in. The members greatly embraced the program saying it would improve on their healthy lives with their families and promised to always work together for an effective development in their community. The meeting finally came to an end after they all agreed on the date that the next meeting would take place.
