Notes
Introduction Life Skills has come to an end in this village of Kigalama however at the end of it all it’s not about the end but whether the community members have learnt anything throughout the entire program. All three Local councils were represented. Overview Lorna and Manuela went to this village to talk to the community of Kigalama, to encourage them that this was not the end but just the beginning of putting everything that was taught to them into practice. A few minutes after they arrived the rain started pouring heavily for about an hour which affected the program greatly as we started the meeting late and also other people failed to make it to the meeting as the whether had disrupted them. Also some thought that because of the weather that we were not going to come. They took shelter in Mr.Balabas home until the rain stopped pouring. After the rain stopped pouring, the meeting started with an opening prayer. After the opening prayer was said, Lorna appreciated the community members for loving her and the program and she commended them for always coming to the meetings despite some challenges however, everything has an end to it Lorna mentioned that this was going to be their final meeting and like all the previous programs, Kibo’s goal is sustainability that Kibo’s role is to come impart knowledge, sensitize and after the community has perceived everything they phase out leaving the community or expecting the community to carry on with these programs. She encouraged them to always work together, put whatever they have learnt in practice and by doing this they will not say that Lifeskills or Kibo has left the village. After these remarks since Lorna has been the common face in this village, she asked Manuela to take over from there. Manuela greeted the community members and without wasting time since time had gone, asked the community to mention what skills they have learnt during the Life Skills course in this village. Different people were able to mention the different Life Skills that is Decision making, communication , Relationship Skills among others. Bakali Kigalama A’s chairman started by thanking Lorna for the work she had done in this village. He said him as a person has learnt a lot and he also requested his children and wives to stand up for recognition as he thanked them for also attending these lessons regularly and he said because of Life Skills , he can now freely communicate to his children. He also mentioned the importance of creating relationships with people because him as a chairman throughout life Skills during mobilization has learnt that you do not enforce people all the time but be able to befriend them and this will lead to other things. Another lady mentioned that she learnt the causes and dangers of early pregnancy, another mentioned how to manage their emotions, another mentioned that they learnt HIV / AIDS Transmission and prevention, Another learnt how and when to communicate with her husband and children and that Incase of anything like a problem or rumor communication can change everything . Another person mentioned that they learnt their roles and responsibilities as a man and woman among others. Manuela thanked all these people from participating and told the community to master all these people and that if they had any challenges concerning the above to approach any of these members that they will be able to help them. She mentioned that this program started in schools but it was seen that the parents were missing out on this information and in order to bridge this gap the community had to be informed as well. Manuela urged the parents to befriend their children if they want to avoid some of the above issues. She said that caining them cannot solve the problem but drawing them close and gaining their trust. Manuela also taught on Menstrual hygiene and Management where she asked how many parents provide pads for their daughters and only 6 put up their hands. Her next question was how do they tell that their daughters have started menstruating?. 2 people mentioned they come to them, others when they say they won’t go to school and others when they complain of stomach and backaches. Manuela encouraged the community to help their children during this time by providing them what to use and also encourage them to go to School. Lorna also added that this is not a problem of only the girls but boys and men too. It takes 2 people to make a child and therefore whatever affects them they-as parents should be able to deal with this together.she mentioned Menstruals can be managed and if done so the number of girls drop out will be reduced and also will increase performance of the girls. She told them most of these problems that affect our children are because parents are shy to talk about them but unless they open up and stop being shy they these problems will not go away. Conclusion The leaders were asked to stand up for recognition and appreciation and the community was encouraged that this was not the end but that the ball is now in their hands to carry this program forward. They said Incase of any problem they can call either Manuela or Lorna.
