Water Sanitation and Hygiene
Tom made a visit to kishaike village to meet with village leaders and discuss about the progress of facility constructions as well as improvements being made in hand washing stands.
When Tom arrived in the village, the chairman and two of the village leaders were waiting at the meeting place. As they waited for more residents to arrive, the weather started to change. It got cloudy and started to drizzle. Only three more members of the chairman’s committee joined.
As time went on, the weather gotten worse and they moved to a house of one of the village leaders.
After waiting for a while as the weather was not getting better, Tom, the chairman and the few members decided to hold a discussion about the program and how to move it forward.
The chairman pointed to some residents who have just been lazy on working on their facilities while others such as the elderly or single mothers have had challenges.
The chairman also pointed on the fact that there are some members on his leadership committee that also have no fax and he said that this has also affected the good progress of the program. Tom asked him on what the solution can be as he is the leader of the village. He said he was going to identify all his committee members without facilities and then meet with them on a personal level to discuss with them on improving on their sanitation standards.
The other, committee members pointed to the fact that some of the committee members have not been active in the program especially encouraging fellow residents to improve. They suggested that they need to regroup and start moving collectively as a team in order to improve and encourage the community on facility construction and improvements.
Tom encouraged the group to work together and continue working for the good of the village. Tom encouraged the vhts to step up in the efforts of encouraging residents on sanitation and hygiene improvements as its their responsibility in the village and they were specifically appointed by the government for that duty and responsibility.
During the discussion, one vht also pointed out one of his colleagues who is a vht but does not have a latrine. They said because she does not have a latrine, this has affected their work as many residents point them to that vht.
But at the end, the vhts and the leadership committee formed a new group that will move around the village without even kibo staff members going to the village.
As the meeting came to an end, the vht that was being accused of not having a latrine came and they all asked him why he had not up to that day constructed a latrine. He assured them that he had started on a new pit. Tom suggested that they visit his home together with the chairman to see his new pit being dug. When they reached, they found a new pit being dug. Tom together with the chairman and committee members and leaders encouraged him to work and finish his latrine so that he can lead by example. The group agreed to move around the village during the weekend and encourage residents on issues of sanitation and hygiene improvements.
