Notes
Enock and Martin went to this village to check on the progress of latrine construction, dish racks, shower areas, kitchen areas, rubbish pits, clean compounds among other factors which improve on the sanitation of the community and every home. They decided to walk in different sections so that they can cover many homes. There teaching was based on standardization of the facilities, use of Ash in latrines, roofing the latrines before heavy rains start which may break down the facilities and hence repeating the same work of latrine construction over and over again. They encouraged them to use good materials like cement, sand, bricks, concrete slabs for the homes which can afford to buy such material and taught them the advantages of such materials. The section which Martin visited, he saw two new pits, one is about 17 ft deep and the other is 10ft. The one of 10ft is still digging deeper till he reaches 15 ft. There are also some people who have understood the benefits of smearing and they’ve gone another step to smear all the facilities in their homes to improve on the beauty of their compounds and cleanliness. The other section which Enock went to, he walked with the Chairman LC1 to the area near the swamp to visit the homes which are in the area. They walked in about 30 homes and 27 of them had good latrines, all in use. The shower areas are also serving there purposes, it was a Friday and most people are moslems in this community, they saw many using the shower areas before going to the mosque for their Friday prayers. There are three new hand washing facilities which were observed during the visit. They were just constructed and in use. Enock and Martin encouraged the community members to make hand washing facilities near their latrines so that they wash their hands after visiting the latrines and before eating anything. This will improve on the hygiene in their homes. Those people who have good facilities in place, were encouraged to maintain all the facilities in good condition.
